Jenny Marks is a flower farmer and flower business educator from western New York. She runs Trademarks Flower Farm, a profitable one-acre flower farm known for its early spring blooms, and Trademark Farmer, where she helps small-scale flower farmers grow thriving, sustainable businesses. She’s the host of the Six Figure Flower Farming podcast and teaches an online business course of the same name. Adding tunnels to your growing plan will help you with protection from the elements, help you extend your pre and post season production, and the return on investment is sooner than you might think. Possibly within months.
When planting in tunnels with crops like ranunculus, the smaller the plant size the more cold hardy they will be.
Think profit first. Look at the next 12 months, and ask what money you need to earn to reinvest back into your company. Then ask what revenue you need for yourself.
Go through each thing you spend money on at the farm. Be careful how you spend and look at every expenditure.
Burnout is real and easy to do when you’re not looking at your numbers.
When receiving negative feedback it’s important to look at what is constructive and evaluate if there is something you can actually do or change.
When trying to grow your business, look for other opportunities or businesses in your area to collaborate. You want to partner with someone where it can be mutually beneficial.
Take a look at your area and see if you can find the people in your area that actually buy flowers.
Be ok with hearing no. It’s important to get used to hearing no so you get better at pushing past the no’s.
If you sell retail you really need to look at having a website.
It’s. your job as a business owner to market your business and be willing to do things to move yourself and your business forward.
Prioritize knowing your numbers. Look and see where your money comes from; what feels easy and what’s working for you.
